Opening a medical clinic in Alberta

If you are opening in Alberta, the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta licenses you to practise. We help you build the clinic around that, anywhere in the province.

The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta regulates the practice of medicine in Alberta. Registration categories and requirements are on the CPSA site. Read them there before you pick an opening date that depends on a licence you do not yet hold.

The Alberta Medical Association is the professional association, the counterpart to the OMA in Ontario and Doctors of BC in British Columbia. Licensing stays with the CPSA.

The provincial plan

Insured services run through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. Billing enrolment with Alberta Health is separate from your CPSA registration. We keep both on the launch plan.

What we do in an Alberta startup

The model, the budget, the lease, the build, the EMR, and the team are the same kinds of decisions as anywhere else in Canada. The college, the payer, and local referrals are what make the project Albertan. Bring those to your free consultation.

Continue with the opening guide or the EMR and licensing service.

Questions physicians ask

Who licenses physicians in Alberta?

The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Use the College site for current registration requirements. The Alberta Medical Association is the provincial association. It does not issue the licence.

Is AHCIP the same thing as a CPSA licence?

No. The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan is the provincial health insurance plan. A certificate of registration and the ability to bill insured services are different steps. Confirm billing enrolment with Alberta Health.
