A clinic can be physically ready and still unable to practise or to bill. Those failures are usually timing failures. The forms were started too late, or the software was picked before anyone described the day.
EMR selection
We start from the workflow, then look at systems. Useful questions:
- Does the product fit the visit types and the documentation style of this specialty?
- How does it handle scheduling, the front desk, and the handoff to billing?
- What does billing look like for the province you will practise in?
- How are referrals, results, and patient messages supposed to move?
- What does training demand of physicians who are also trying to open a building?
- If you are leaving another system, what does data migration actually include?
The right system is the one that fits this clinic, in this province. There is no national winner.
Licensing and billing setup
We keep licensing and billing on the same plan as the build.
- In Ontario, the licence comes from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Publicly insured services are billed to OHIP. See the Ontario page for the official links.
- In Alberta, the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta regulates practice. See the Alberta page.
- In British Columbia, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia regulates practice, and insured services run through the Medical Services Plan. See the British Columbia page.
Every province has its own college and its own plan. Bring yours to the consultation and we will put the right authority on the workplan.
Licensing and billing setup is coordination, not legal advice. Your college confirms what you need in order to practise and to bill.
A certificate of registration, hospital privileges, and billing enrolment are different steps. Specialty certification does not replace the provincial licence. Confirm each one with the body that issues it.
Questions physicians ask
Will you tell me which EMR to buy?
We compare systems against your workflow, your province, billing, referrals, training, and any records you need to bring with you. You and your colleagues still have to live in the one you choose.
Can you get my licence or my billing number?
You apply to your college and your health ministry. We keep registration and billing enrolment on the launch plan so they are ready for the week you want to open.
